This morning, we headed to the library for Snakes, Skulls, and Skins. I little show about grassland animals in Colorado compared to Africa and how they adjust to living in their environments.
Cairn and Skylar were mesmerized from the beginning with eyes focused toward the front where everything was happening. Andrew was laying on the floor looking at the ceiling, playing with the cushion and rolling on the floor. Every time the presenter showed something new I would get Andrew's attention and have him look toward the front. I figured she was just talking over his head too much so he wasn't interested. Well, I was wrong.
Bison are called bison in the United States because they are different animals then the ones in Africa that are water buffalo. Prairie dogs are good for the environment because they dig burrows that other animals can live in after they move out. Black footed ferrets are their enemies. Rhino horns are not tusks but lots of hairs clumped together. Foxes, coyotes and wolves use their bushy tails to keep their faces warm in the winter.
We also got to meet a snake - Western hognose snake. Hognose because his face looks like a hog. He is venomous to small animals but not to humans and he is the only snake that plays dead. He pops a couple blood vessels in his tail and his eyes to make it look like he is bleeding and he flips over.
Check out this video.
After the show we ran a couple errands and Andrew talked about all the animals at the show and could describe the difference between carnivores and herbivores and their skulls. Carnivores have sharp teeth and their eyes look toward the front. Herbivores have flat teeth and their eyes are on the side of their heads. And you thought he wasn't listening!! Yay me too.
Then it was home for laundry until Andrew noticed water all over the floor, bike riding on the street, a visit from Baby C, and gardening. I also worked on cleaning up the study since it has been a disaster for several weeks. While I was moving books around, I found the $163 I had lost a couple weeks ago. It was the Girl Scout dues money that everyone had paid me in cash. I was going to have to eat the cost of everyone's dues since I had lost it and it was cash. Thank goodness I found it!!
Dinner was at 5 PM, baths and bed but it was a rough night. We had high winds and smoke in the air. Andrew couldn't sleep so he ended up on the floor next to my bed and between the fire trucks going by, the wind shaking the house and the smoke smell in the house he didn't fall asleep until after midnight.
